Social Norms, Gender Norms and Adolescent Girls: A Brief Guide

This brief by the Overseas Development Institute provides a useful overview of key thinking on social norms concerning gender inequalities that affect adolescent girls to better inform research and practice. It includes definitions of gender norms, and insights from gender theory and social norms theory to help understand what influences gender norms and how they operate in particular circumstances. It also questions the relationship between poverty and discriminatory gender norms, and show how while poverty contributes to gender discrimination, girls of more affluent backgrounds are also discriminated based on their gender.
