Health Sector
While VAWG is a critical public health issue, many countries’ health policies do not adequately address it. Integrating VAWG prevention activities into men’s and women’s health services can be effective, drawing on multiple points of contact with the health sector, e.g. antenatal care, HIV testing, and immunisation. These opportunities can also promote government buy-in.
Additionally, the health sector plays an important role in response to VAWG as it can be a first point of call for survivors of violence. Training health providers to recognise VAWG, provide appropriate care and support, and facilitate referrals to essential services is critical. This approach is important to do no harm and prevent secondary trauma and re-victimisation.
